Yesterday I was putting my socks and shoes on after an acupuncture treatment when the acupuncturist, who either knew my political leaning or made a good guess, stuck her head in the door and said, "Trump has been convicted on all 34 counts!"
I said, "Thanks so much for telling me. You've made my day."
Also, my week, my month, and if that well-deserved felony conviction ends up helping Biden to beat Trump this November, my entire year. Lifetime, even, because if Trump is elected, I fear that our beloved democracy is in mortal danger.
A day later, I'm still super pleased that the Liar in Chief has finally been held to account in a court of law.
Trump lost fair and square in a Manhattan courtroom presided over by a highly competent judge, who ably guided the legal proceeding in a manner that supported the difficult work of the 12 jurors who unanimously convicted Trump on each of the counts brought by the prosecution.
Like so many other people, I initially figured that this case was less important than the three other cases Trump has been criminally indicted in: the classified documents case, the January 6 insurrection case, and the Georgia election interference case.
But as I learned more about this case, which really wasn't about the "hush money" Trump paid to a porn star to keep her quiet about the sexual relationship they had shortly after Trump's wife gave birth to their son, Barron, but about Trump's violation of campaign finance laws, since his motivation was to prevent voters from learning about his affair just before the 2016 presidential election, it grew in importance for me.
After all, it's a big deal to illegally call the $130,000 that went to the porn star, Stormy Daniels, a legal fee to his "fixer," Michael Cohen, instead of what it was, a campaign contribution aimed at keeping a story out of the public eye that could have swayed the election in Hillary Clinton's favor.
This makes the parade of Republican politicians marching in lockstep to Trump's totally bogus claim that the jury verdict was rigged, a travesty of justice, so dangerous. Today's Republican Party has lost all sense of ethics and morality. Their only concern is keeping Dear Leader in their good graces, not doing what is best for the country -- which means supporting the rule of law, not tearing it down.
President Biden had nothing to do with this case. It was brought by a New York City prosecutor, given the go-ahead by a New York City grand jury, heard in a state of New York courtroom, and decided by a jury made up of 12 residents of New York City.
However, these undeniable facts didn't stop Trump from ranting and rambling on for over 30 minutes today in what was billed as a press conference, except Trump didn't take any questions, and only got a few sentences out that weren't incoherent, filled with lies, or both. I watched the whole thing, as painful as it was. Here's the video.
I find it astounding that so many Americans are willing to cast their ballot for Trump in the upcoming presidential election, given how meandering, unorganized, and filled with falsehoods Trump's remarks in the video are. This sure isn't who I want leading our country when a crisis hits.
The Biden campaign shared highlights (better termed lowlights) from Trump's post-conviction remarks today.
