Donald Trump has crossed the line from lying about Biden not winning the election to actively trying to subvert the will of the voters. That's sedition, which is illegal.
Here's the definition of sedition. That's exactly what Trump is trying to do. Incite his followers to overturn the lawful results of the election.
This is beyond outrageous. Trump is behaving like a third-world dictator, the only difference being that the United States, thankfully, still has enough judges who believe in the rule of law -- not Trumpism -- to stop this coup attempt.
Journalists and other informed observers of Trump's authoritarian behavior also deserve credit for letting the public know what's happening.
It's an unprecedented moment in American history. For the first time, a president who has been decisively voted out of office is attempting to stay in office through illegal means. There is no legal authority for Republican legislatures to appoint their own slate of electors. None.
A Politico story makes this clear. In every state a process for choosing electors was in place on November 3. It isn't possible to change that process after election day. The presidential candidate who gets the most votes earns their slate of electors. So what Trump is trying to do is both illegal and deeply unethical.
Mostly through my Twitter feed, I've been watching today's seditious actions by Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and the wacko lawyers helping Trump and Giuliani try to steal the election. Here's a bunch of tweets that reveal what's going on. The tweets go from less recent to more recent.
Wow. This poll shows only 12% of Trump voters believing that Biden legitimately won the election. That's scary. If you talk to people who voted for Trump, about nine out of ten have bought into the baseless conspiracy theory that Biden didn't win fairly.
