Salem Progressive Agenda survey results are an appealing vision

It's easy to get disheartened about the current state of our nation. So much disharmony, discord, and dissatisfaction with how things are going, 

So my spirits were boosted when I saw the results of a Salem Progressive Agenda survey of 103 citizens -- all progressives, not surprisingly, me being one of them. Here's the first question.

Now, likely some people in Salem will look at this and other questions (more accurately, statements) on the survey and think, "Yikes! I sure hope this doesn't happen!"

I could be wrong -- an ever-present possibility -- but my optimism leads me to think that most of the policies in the survey would appeal to a majority of Salem citizens. After all, polling shows that most Americans favor progressive policies even if they don't consider themselves progressives.

I'm impressed with how comprehensive and well-stated the 26 statements were. I couldn't think of anything to add to this progressive wish list, though other people did. You can read their comments at the end of the survey.

Thanks to Mark Wigg and Jim Scheppke for putting the survey together. It provides a road map for how Salem should improve. If local conservatives have a different vision, and I'm sure they do, it'd be great if they'd do something similar for their end of the political spectrum.

Each of the 26 progressive statements was agreed to by the 103 respondents, downtown parking being the only exception. I guess that isn't surprising, since this subject generates strong feelings on both sides of the free parking vs. parking meters divide.

And most likely the ONLY "progressives" in Salem.
