I'm happy for Ukraine.
This embattled nation, which has been bravely fighting the unprovoked Russian invasion since February 24, 2022, has been waiting for more American aid for months due to dithering by House Republicans.
But today Ukraine had something to celebrate: $60 billion in aid. It took Democrats to get the aid bill across the House finishing line, first by supplying votes needed to have the bill move out of the Rules Committee, then by supplying votes needed to have the bill approved by the full House.
The vote breakdown is a mark of shame for the 112 House GOP members who said "no" to helping Ukraine remain a democratic nation, thereby saying "yes" to Putin's autocratic desire to reconstitute the Soviet Union by force.
It's shocking that a majority of House Republicans, the party which used to be staunchly against Russian authoritarianism, voted against the Ukraine aid bill. This shows how deeply the GOP has embraced Trump's love of Putin and other dictators.
Which is scary. Trump aspires to be a dictator himself. That's bad enough. When a good share of the politicians in the Republican Party are willing to go along with that unconstitutional aspiration, the stakes are much higher for the November election.
In Russia the state-run television channels have been praising our House of Representatives for holding up aid to Ukraine. Thankfully, that aid should soon start reaching Ukraine, since the Senate is poised to pass the House bill and Biden will eagerly sign it.
This is bad news for Russia and good news for the many friends of Ukraine in the world. Hopefully the aid will include much-needed additional anti-missile systems to stop Russian attacks on civilian targets like apartment buildings.
The Ukrainian people deserve to have their own version of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. Sure, Ukraine is much larger than Israel, so protecting that country will be more difficult that protecting Israel is.
But saving the lives of Ukrainians is just as important as saving the living of Israelis. Too bad a majority of House Republicans don't agree.
Here's a post on X that moved me.
i don't have a good answer for Ukraine, but it wasn't helped when Obama ignored Russia taking Crimea. And now, is this another Vietnam and Afghanistan? Ongoing wars that we can't end but can suck our budgets dry. I hope you know when the government blows its budgets the answer is print more money. Guess that that does to the value of dollars...
