" I told a story about a professor I had in graduate school who would only wait for 20 minutes to see a doctor."

-- Bill O'Reilly, the reviled or beloved, as the case may be, political commentator formerly of Fox News once remarked on his show that he should not have to wait more than 15 minutes for his Dr. appointment. He said something like, "The Dr.'s time is valuable but so is mine. Making patients wait longer than that is disrespectful except in the case of an emergency."

Unfortunately that is the case with medicine. You never know what condition is going to come next or what it will require in terms of time and attention.

At a Dr.'s office in my area they have an LED board on the wall indicating if the Dr. is on time or how many minutes behind schedule they are. I think this is a good idea. It doesn't change the unpredictability of medicine but at least you know where you stand in terms of wait time and are not left sitting there clueless as to how long the wait will be.
