Brian, I don't think it's as nefarious as you make it out. I've noticed in the past that the SJ will run a story online the afternoon or evening before it runs in the print edition of the paper. The initial online story generates comments, but come 4am or so when the day's final print edition is uploaded to the website, including the online stories, all the prior comments seem to be reset or wiped out. It's happened to me on a number of occasions, often on seemingly uncontroversial topics.

M, that would make sense, except my comment was posted at 9:07 am on Sunday, after the print edition arrived in our paper box. Three comments were posted after mine. I'm not sure when Susann's comment was posted, but it probably also was on Sunday.

Plus, as you can see in an update I've left on this post, the Statesman Journal's digital editor, Dann Miller, didn't cite the electronic vs. print distinction as a reason for the comments being deleted.

After I pointed out to him that neither Susann nor I deleted our own comments, Dann said he would do more checking into this and see what he can find out. Sure seems like either someone at the paper deleted the comments, or some mysterious glitch in their computer system deleted the five comments.

I know your position on this subject Brian, but I greatly prefer the commenting rules of the Daily Dead Fish Wrapper (Oregonian) to the Statesman Urinal.
We have subscribed to the Urinal since 1980 and I am not allowed to post because I am not a Facespace / Mybook robot sheep.
Although very few of my comments DO get deleted, most of them don't.
The Fish Wrapper has a much more robust and diverse discourse of comments, and it doesn't cost us a penny!
(SECRET MESSAGE TO SU: SELL, SELL, SELL, SELL!)
Salem needs a newspaper!
