Salem Weekly, our alternative paper, is a treasure for our community. Without it, we'd never know about important news, events, and cultural happenings that the Statesman Journal doesn't cover.
Ruth Hudgens sent out an email with a great idea. Donate to Salem Weekly!
There are two ways to do this: (1) A direct donation to Salem Weekly that isn't tax-deductible, or (2) A donation to one of two non-profit organizations that's earmarked for buying ads in Salem Weekly, which is tax-deductible (so far as I know).
Both ways are described below. Here's what Ruth said:
Dear Friends of Alternative News,
A.P. Walther has been publishing our mightily alternative paper, Salem Weekly, for the past ten years on less than a shoestring, cobbling together pieces of computers to make one that works. From economic heydays through market meltdowns and on to timid upswings, he has held fast and true to the mission of Salem Weekly.
There would be no alternative to the Statesman Journal without him. Imagine that.
True Confession: The market upswing helped me (and maybe you) out recently and that money probably came about from the actions of corporate weasels that I would be appalled to know about. Even so, cash flowing more freely, whether from corporate greed and malfeasance or not, is cash flowing and I intend to invest as much as possible in the alternative game, right here in Salem, close to home.
Please join me in sharing what you can by Valentines Day, February 14, 2015. Salem Weekly needs a Mac that will do the job of the three different units A.P. now uses, newspaper rack and box upgrades, and vehicle repair.
So, let's pay it forward for non-corporate news. Salem Weekly needs your help.
Send checks to:
Salem Weekly
104 Commercial St. NE
Salem, Oregon 97301
Or, better yet, stop by at the Salem Weekly office with your cold, hard cash. See how the paper runs! Contact A.P. Walther directly at
503-569-1841 or
[email protected] for possible tax write-off options.
There is so much more we can accomplish, together. Please pass it on...

Regarding the tax-deductible giving approach, A.P. Walther explained it to me in an email:
The non-profit idea goes like this:
The giver gives to a non-profit and earmarks the gift for advertising with Salem Weekly. That way Salem Weekly gets sales, the non-profit gets advertising, and the giver gets a write-off.
I have spoken to Willamette Heritage Center and Straub, both said that they would be happy to do this. Marion Polk Food Share has done this for Salem Weekly before. It could be any non-profit as long as they agree to buy ads with it.
This is what I'm going to do -- send a check postmarked before January 1 to either the Willamette Heritage Center, a.k.a. Mission Mill, or the Straub Environmental Center. Below I've attached sample Word file letters that can be printed out and sent with a donation to these organizations.
Here are the addresses of the organizations that have agreed to buy ads in Salem Weekly with tax-deductible donations made to them. (Addresses are also in the above letters.)
