Olympia, Washington and my home town, Salem, Oregon, are both state capitals. Each has an institution of higher learning, Evergreen State College and Willamette University.
But after that, the Path of Cool diverges -- based on what I've been learning about Olympia after being entranced by a video of Olympia's annual "Procession of the Species" parade through downtown.
And this was taken in 2012, before Washington legalized marijuana.
Man, imagine how the parade will look in 2014! Well, probably about the same.
I suspect that, especially given Evergreen State College's far-out reputation, folks in the Olympia area are considerably higher than the typical Salem resident -- proximity to sea level notwithstanding.
For some reason I'd thought of Olympia as Washington's Salem. I don't think I've ever stopped there, just driven past on I-5. Yet Olympia appears to have a lot more going on than Salem.
Who knows? Maybe a relocation to the Olympia area could be in our future one day.
My wife and I like the location: on Puget Sound, about equidistant between the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainier, and Seattle.
Similar to Salem, substituting the Cascades and Portland. But it looks to me like Olympia beats Salem on the artist'y quirky front, judging by the charming Procession of the Species parade.
