Why should humans care at all about the slaughter of animals? We are not accountable for our actions - no higher power is going to take us to task for breeding certain species for food.
Animals consume various flora and transform it into the muscle of their bodies. Humans consume animal bodies. Animals concentrate energy. We take advantage of that fact. And, as an added benefit - animal bodies taste a heck of a lot better than grass.

When animal husbandry no longer has any survival value for humans, then humans will naturally desist from the practice of eating animals.
