This is just about the stupidest thing I've heard yet.

After all, President John Adams placed his hand on a law book, not a Bible. And the Constitution says nothing about a Bible. In fact, it provides for the opposite - "swear or affirm" - for those that cannot swear no matter what book they're holding.

These people are going off the deep end.

Kari, good points. Thanks for mentioning what I neglected to put in the post: that there's no requirement to swear on the Bible. I believe the actual legal "swearing in" is done in a group fashion and that the Bible, or whatever, is just brought out during an individual ceremonial photo-op session.

To swear or affirm. Why does one need to, "Raise ones Right Hand?"

Isn't that a symbolic ritual too?

Dear Brian,

Cf. Mt. 5:34-37; also Jas. 5:12. Further, why not put one's hand (and faithfulness) on The Constitution?

You wrote well about one more of the nutty things going on right now. We can't complain because at least as Americans, we are only tongue lashed-- not for real whipped over our viewpoints. If some of the extremists though got their way, it'd be a real whip which is why we need to speak out against such stupidity. Jesus, by the way, didn't think highly of making a big deal out of such oaths period-- just let your word be your word-- but a lot who are claiming his way, don't know much about what he said.
