Oh my God! Laurel and I couldn’t stop laughing at Stephen Colbert’s “tribute” to President Bush at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner last night. We watched his hilarious send-up of the Bush Administration’s absurdities today via the Internet.
Links to complete video of Colbert can be found at Democratic Underground. The broadband challenged can read a transcript courtesy of the Daily Kos. Naturally I recommend the video, which includes a Colbert audition tape to be the new White House press secretary. You’ll never be able to look upon Helen Thomas the same way.
The best part of Colbert’s performance was how uncomfortable he made Bush feel. The cutaway shots of Bush’s unsmiling face once Colbert got warmed up and rolling are priceless. Almost made me forget the pain of November 2000 and 2004.
Clearly the President was not amused. Good. Colbert went right up to the edge of good-natured satire. Probably he crossed over several times. Kudos, Stephen. This was your chance to speak your mind to the leader of the Western world, who was sitting uncomfortably just a few feet away from the Master of Truthiness.
Colbert rose to the occasion. Democrats, did you take notice?
And a kilted Skunk Baxter, too; funny, indeed!
