Te means "virtue", though not the virtue we speak of the English language. It's more like the essential essence of something.

Tao means "the Way", both the path and the ultimate destination. Ching means "book". Thus, the Tao Te Ching can be translated as "The Book of the Way to Virtue".

As to your comment that you are not a Taoist sage, who's to say? You spoke from the heart and you acknowledge that you don't know everything there is to know. Sounds to me like you possess two of the needed qualities of a sage!

You know, I was in that class. I would be the brunette sitting next to the annoying blond guy who has visions of being the next male supermodel...
The next week in class, everyone talked about how we enjoyed your time in class, and that you tried to tell us in layman's terms..and we were appreciative.
SO.. I go home that night to tell my husband all this new found information.. but yet, it came out quite like the questions/discussion we had about Pooh and over- analyzing the natural way...
So not only have I confused myself, my husband jokingly teases me I learned a "practice" that follows Winnie the Pooh. If Paris Hilton can be full with all her emptyiness, can I be clear headed in all my confusion?
