I enjoyed the terminally cranky, but (almost) always enjoyable Mark Morford as he shared his latest rant on Bush’s anti-environmental policies. It truly is amazing, how the right wing has made conservation anathema for conservatives. Shouldn’t conservatives be committed to conserving? You would think so.
My dear deeply conservative mother, who had me reading National Review before Anderson’s Fairy Tales, or so I remember in my increasingly muddled recollections of my childhood, was thrifty and concerning about waste in that good old-fashioned New England fashion. If she were alive today, I think she would be writing empassioned letters to the editor, as she was fond of doing, about how the Republican Party is no longer truly conservative. You only have to look at the current and projected budget deficits to realize that.
A recent New Yorker piece pointed out that Bush failed to mention the environment once in his 2004 State of the Union speech, the first time in quite a while that a president has totally stiffed the environment. Isn’t it sort of important, air, food, water, earth, all that stuff? More important than steroid use, I would think, or assuring that gays and lesbians can’t marry.
The New Yorker author also pointed out that Mars wasn’t mentioned in the speech either, the theory being that Bush’s attention span is about one week on any policy issue not related to terrorism or tax cuts for the wealthy. I thought this was the big thing that the whole nation was going to rally around, going back to the Moon, then on to Mars. Probably the GOP overnight polling didn’t show a big bounce for Bush after he announced the Huge Space Initiative, so it got dropped from the speech.
What an idiot. I can hardly wait for the Democrat candidate to debate Bush on national TV. Either Edwards or Kerry would tear him to shreds, especially Edwards. I’d fork out bucks to watch it on pay-per-view. It would be more interesting than the lingerie bowl, which I believe is asking $20 or some such to watch scantily clad women “play” football during halftime of the Super Bowl. Fortunately, I got to see some of the “players” in their “uniforms” a few days ago as I was making my nightly check of Howard Stern’s television show, to see what nymphomanic bimbo was featured that day. I have to say that the lingerie bowl participants are worth viewing, but not for $20.
