In fact, he's heard of this 'technique' of addressing oneself in the third person in a number of other contexts also. Ramana Maharshi comes to mind, as does Sri Ramakrishna (two very different kinds of people, and representing two very different traditions). Of course, in those contexts it was post-facto and spontaneous, that is, following the (alleged) loss of ordinary ego-sense.

The Dalai Lama is known to do this sort of thing at times in the course of interviews. Of course, with him, you never know, he could merely be kidding, just having a laugh, sharing an inner joke with those readers who might be in the know (rather than actually/seriously following the technique, either as technique proper or as post-facto manifestation of his realizations).
