How could anybody believe the Pope is a spiritual person worthy of emulation?
Clearly the Pope is a narrow-minded bigot who is woefully ignorant about both modern science and the basics of human compassion.
Here's proof: "Pope says future of mankind at stake over gay marriage."
The defence of the family, the Pope said, "is about man himself. And it becomes clear that when God is denied, human dignity also disappears."
On Monday, the Vatican's newspaper described laws on gay marriage as an attempt at a communist-like "utopia", a day after tens of thousands of demonstrators turned out in France to support legalising both marriages and adoption for gay couples.
Truthfully -- a word the Pope and other religious leaders have no use for -- homosexuality isn't a conscious choice, as the Pope believes. As many gay people have pointed out, who the hell would choose a sexual orientation that is so much more difficult to live than heterosexuality?
And there is essentially (if not exactly) zero evidence that gay marriage is bad for children, or weakens traditional marriage. I live about 75 miles from Washington state, where gay marriage was legalized recently.
I can testify that my marriage, which happens to involve a man and a woman, hasn't been affected at all. The Pope is just spouting nonsense, all too easy for religious fundamentalists to do.
There is, though, some good news in the story.
France's parliament is to debate the government-backed "marriage for all" bill early next year.
With President Francois Hollande's Socialists enjoying a strong majority, the bill is expected to pass despite vehement opposition from the right and religious groups.
