I don't remember the name of the book, but I do remember certain paradoxical tidbits that he so brilliantly concocted like "your lips trying to kiss themselves," or "your teeth trying to bite themselves," but one gem that always takes my breath away when I think about it deals with your question here about the universe expanding into what... ?
He likened 'nothingness' to simply being 'nothing' and you can experience this 'nothing' right now — by trying to see behind your head. Go ahead, turn your eyes around and focus on what lies on the 'other side' of your sight. Try to look into the back of your mind so to speak, the back half of your brain. There is just 'nothing' there. It's not like closing your eyes or becoming blind. Feel the nothingness, (if there is such a thing as feeling nothingness, the void). It is just there, always has been, always will be, we just don't notice it because it is 'nothing!'
One could suppose that the tidal wave of 'something' created by the big bang could be encroaching faster than the speed of light on or into this same 'nothing' like consciousness/existence is being created and focusing out of it.
