It is called THE PRICIPLE and is currently playing in Chicago. It was the highest grossing film for a new release on a week-end.

ABOUT THE FILM

One of the most heated debates of the century, coming 2014

Everyone knows that the ancient idea of Earth in the center of the universe is a ridiculous holdover from a superstitious age, right? Modern science has proven that we are nothing special! We inhabit, in Carl Sagan’s words, “….an insignificant planet of a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people.”

Well….prepare to be shocked!

“The Principle”, destined to become one of the most controversial films of our time, brings before the public eye astonishing results from recent large-scale surveys of our universe- surveys which disclose unexpected evidence of a preferred direction in the cosmos, aligned with our supposedly insignificant Earth.

“The Principle” features narration by Kate Mulgrew (“Star Trek Voyager”, “Orange Is The New Black”, and “Ryan’s Hope”), stunning animations by BUF Compagnie Paris (“Life of Pi”, “Thor”), and commentary from prominent scientists including George Ellis, Michio Kaku, Julian Barbour, Lawrence Krauss, and Max Tegmark.

Tracing the development of cosmology from its inception (Stonehenge, the Great Pyramid at Giza), through the great revolution of Copernicus, to the astonishing new discoveries of Earth-oriented alignments in the largest structures of our visible universe, “The Principle” leads us face-to-face with the question, and the challenge- what does this mean for the future of mankind?
The Cloud of Unknowing is one of my very favourite mystical works.

I feel this little gem of spirituality (written in very beautiful and direct English) captures the essence of Christian apophatic mystical theology. Meister Eckhart and Denys the Aeropagite are very similar (the writer of the Cloud of Unknowing wrote a translation of Denys's Mystical Theology) in their apophatic approach to the Absolute.

Evagrius of Pontus and St John of Cross are also very important mystics. Evagrius founded a form of mysticism very similar in many ways to Buddhist meditation (except wisdom of Reality becomes gnosis of the Holy Trinity).

St John of the Cross is probably the most important post-medieval Christian mystic, and his own mysticism helped produce other great Christian mystics, including those in the Carmelite order. St John also doesn't give much time for things like wacky visions or hysterical outbursts, which like the calm meditative contemplation of the Cloud author, are deeply reassuring.

It was also interesting when I came across a passage in Denys which was very similar to a paragraph in the essay 'On Beauty' by Plotinus which outlines the progression from the beauty of the sensible world to the world of the intelligible (the inner world as seen by the soul or mind) and then to the formless One.
